Still learning
A wise man once told me "never stop challenging your mind" . I am so close to 50 I can smell it and I am still learning. When I started my doctoral program I was disappointed because it wasn't the "science" of medicine. In 9 short weeks I have grown into a politically interested and soon to be active nurse. Policy and healthcare proposals have ignited my passion. The important thing for new nurses to know (AKA Pearl #2) is health care goes beyond the confines of the hospital. We are a nation rich in resources. We must fix our broken health care system! There are many hard working people out there who cannot afford health insurance. We must remember that our good fortune is not only because of our hard work, but by the grace of GOD. Use you time and your talents to help educate, cure, and comfort. ...I am starting to amaze myself :)

Nursing Pearl #1
I have always dreamed of being asked to speak at the pinning ceremony of my alma mater, Gadsden State Community College. I would wear a sleek, slimming black dress, my best black pumps, and my D& G glasses (for the scholarly effect). I would stand facing a graduating class of excited yet exhausted nursing graduates. It would be then and there I would tell them the cold, hard truth..."when a patient is confused, trying to reorient them NEVER works!" Now you know!

Welcome to my blogspot
Have you ever heard the saying "nurses eat their young"? This blog spot is for new nurses from not so new nurses who want to help you be the best! I have been in nursing for 25 years. Only yesterday I was 105 pounds wearing my white dress, white stockings , white leather shoes and last but not least my nursing cap.
It seems there is a small group of people within the hospital that like to make life tough for new nurses. I remember an older nursing assistant who would always say" that is not my job". Out of respect, fear, and intimidation I let her get by with it for about 4 months. She was never nice or helpful to me...until 10 years later when I became her unit manager :) The tables had turned and not in her favor.
You may think you will be a rookie forever...but you won't! Time flies by. Enjoy your career and come back often!
